I remember coming home several times from school in elementary/ jr. high to containers covering all the counter space. This happened once every couple of months. That sight always meant that my Nana was cleanin’ out her refrigerators. For some reason that’s one of those random memories I’ll never forget.
Due to the upcoming holiday season & some unidentified smells, the time had come for me to empty out & deep clean my refrigerator just like my Nana does. I did some thorough cleaning up & fun organization/crazy-labeling so I thought I’d share the details with y’all!
Here is my before shot. I actually tackled the fridge in order to find the root of an awful smell. I actually thought the morbid scent was a dead animal trapped under the fridge. Alas, there was nothin’ but dust bunnies. So into the fridge abyss I went. Fortunately, I found the culprit & you really don’t want to know…
First I totally emptied out the fridge & went to town with my go to cleaner, Green Works glass & surface. This isn’t even an ad, it’s just that awesome. I use it for literally everything- windows, mirrors, bathrooms, countertops, tabletops, the stove, the microwave, sticky surfaces, you name it!
I read that lining your fresh produce drawers with newspapers absorbed any odors. So I tried it. It’s still there because I can’t say it isn’t working.
Next, I ran to Target. Since that’s what I always seem to do. Target is always the answer people. Really though, it was time to jump on the fridge mat bandwagon. I grabbed these $2 placemats to use as shelf liners. They were the perfect size. I didn’t even need to cut them!
Here’s the after shot. Lots of labels! Sometimes I turn into a crazy label lady. I never know when she’s going to coming out, but when she does it’s full force. All or nothing.
I used colorful washi tape & sharpies to organize & label my shelves This way everything has a place. I made sure to have the biggest shelf in both the fridge & freezer open for leftovers only. I tend to have a lot of those cooking for just the two of us. I also go so far as to label the containers with what’s inside & the date. I find this totally necessary so that I don’t run into that smell problem I previously mentioned, ever again. Also it’s much easier to glance into the fridge & see what I’ve got left as opposed to trying to discern what’s inside the square container with a red lid. Time saver times 100.
Now is the best time to give your fridge/freezer a thorough cleaning. Get it all nice & fresh before the holidays, clear out any questionable items & take inventory of what you have on hand. I may or may not have uncovered things buried deep in the freezer from last year’s holiday leftovers…oops!
How ofte do you clean out your fridge?
Happy organizing friends!
