Nana’s 70th- A Tropical Soiree!

My Nana turned 70 Saturday (I’m sure she just loves me broadcasting her age! Sorry Nana! The balloons give it away anyway), & we had some surprises for her, ending with cake & prolonged celebrating at our house.

So I took the opportunity to go overboard with thematic party decor! The theme of choice seemed to be tropical/beachy/summery. Ya know, all those things that are super popular right now? Pineapples, flamingos, palms, balloons etc. I take any excuse o throw a party y’all!

I totally adore how everything turned out! Keep scrolling for diy tropical party ideas!

I took the photos long before anyone showed up, so the beloved drink dispenser is still empty! The lucky pineapple got filled with raspberry lemonade & lemon-lime soda. That’s my go-to for pink punch. Dispenser found at Sur La Table. I got it half off on sale, so if you want one HURRY!

This is a view of the whole “party space” or the part of the house I took the red, white & blue out of for the day! Granted, the entire main area of our house is open, so it was still patriotic all outside of this shot.

Painted pineapples are so much fun for summer gatherings! Why stop there, do different colors for different seasons! For this party, we painted the bottoms gold & tops bright white. It is completely amazing how well pineapples take spray paint y’all! I’m switching these to red, white & blue for the Fourth!

A few words on painted pineapples…1- spray paint only. 2- I’m not sure if you can still eat them. I am not a doctor nor a nutritionists, so please use your own judgement. 3- I’ve had them last for almost 2 weeks before I toss them. They will likely last longer. 4- I have looked for faux pineapples & the only realish looking ones are $40 & up.

The fern install on the chandelier turned out so nice too! You can see the how to video here on my Facebook page!

My husband actually said to me while I was putting it up, “That’s a 90’s thing isn’t it?” I informed him that was ivy he was thinking about & reassured him that fern & palm leaves were so in. So glad he was concerned with my pre-millennial decor…ha!

The golden number balloons are from the Target dollar spot, for only a dollar! They have all the numbers & even some words too.

Also, pineapples filled with flowers are my new fave! My mother-in-law got me a new toy- a pineapple slicer! *Affiliate Link* It it is actually super amazing & leaves the pineapple shell in tact, just like this! I obviously had to fill it with flowers! I think this will be the usual thing from now on.

Me & my sister-in-law worked on these centerpieces with supplies from the Dollar Tree! The base is a wide, plastic pot. I grabbed 3 to line up at the back of the table & we spray painted them gold. next, we filled them with floral foam & poked in the flamingoes. We spray painted the flamingoes white beforehand too. I thought were classier this way!

We added small rocks over the foam to keep things in place then stuffed with crumbled white tissue paper. I found these packs of white sea shells at the dollar Tree & we used that over the tissue paper to add a beachy vibe. I love how they looked with the gold lanterns, painted pineapples & other decor items!

The balloon swag was surprisingly easy too.  We blew up a bunch of pink balloons to all different sizes then attached them to the wall with thumbtacks. I bought a live fern to use in the arch & the chandelier. I wanted to go for faux greenery, but it was pretty pricey. I also thought to grab some live fern branches & greenery from the floral department at the grocery store, but I realized I could buy a whole live fern for less than $10! This was the obvious way to go! We cut up the fern & attached it everywhere with tape. The best part is, we didn’t even use that much so the fern looks nice & full siting on my front porch!

Luckily, I didn’t have to worry about an entire party menu & I had the desserts professionally made! I added a fruit salad, poured the punch & set out a bowl of mixed nuts so it looked like I put in a little effort.

  • Such a fun party. I love all the pineapples! The balloon and fern swag is also very cool. I recently threw 80th birthday parties for both of my parents. I had a quilt themed party for my mother and a succulent themed party for my dad, both of which I blogged about. It is so much fun to really lean into a theme. I know that my parents were really touched by the effort and I am sure that your Nana was really appreciative of all your effort.

    • Thanks Lisa! I tend to go a little crazy with a theme! Thanks for stopping by. I’ll have to go check out your parties too!
